The two seemed destined for a lightning homestretch only for Chemutai to suffer a bad fall over a barrier in the final stages of the race.
She would struggle on to complete the race, giving England’s Elizabeth Bird an opportunity to bag silver right under her nose
Injured and in pain, she maintained her pace to the finishing line. She was wheeled off after the race.
Kenya’s Chepkoech, who dominated the race, running side by side with Chemutai till the final lap and the nasty fall, clinched second gold for Kenya smashing the Commonwealth Games Record of 9:15.68 previously held by Uganda’s Dorcus Inzikuru.
Elizabeth Bird posted 9:17.79 while Chemutai earned bronze, clocking 9:23.24.
The medal is Uganda’s fourth at the games.
