DPP PARTICIPATES IN THE SGBV SESSION HELD AT HIGH COURT SITTING AT KAMULI

Today, the DPP Judge Jane Frances Abodo participated in the SGBV sessionĀ  by prosecuting an aggravated defilement case before Lady Judge Dr. Winfred Nabisinde at the High Court sitting at Kamuli.

The DPP , Asst. DPP Ms. Samali Wakooli incharge of SGBV sessions in ODPP and the Criminal Advisor- Governance and Security Program Ms. Lucy Ladira had gone to Kamuli on a monitoring exercise of identifying theĀ  best practices and challenges faced while prosecuting SGBVĀ  cases.

The DPP joined her team of Prosecutors from Jinja Region to wit; the Regional Officer- Jinja Ms. Gladys Nyanzi, Resident Chief State Attorney- Iganga Ms.Peace Biira and RSA- Kamuli Mr. Charles Akol in handling the SGBV session.

The first case of the day was prosecuted by DPP herself. It was a case of aggravated defilement where she led evidence of 2 minors. She made an application to have the matter handled in camera which order was granted and people were told to vacate the Court room inorder to accord privacy to the victim.

After prosecution adducing evidence of only 2 witnesses, the accused changed his plea and was convicted on his own plea of guilt.

 

In mitigation, DPP asked for 45 years so that the accused is given time to reform.Ā  The matter was adjourned to tomorrow for sentencing.

The second case was handled by the HoD Gender, Children and Sexual Offences. The suspect who was accused of aggravated defilement also changed his plea after prosecution adducing evidence from 4 witnesses. He was also convicted on his own plea of guilt.The sentence was deferred to tomorrow.

The rest of the cases were handled by the team from the Region Office -Jinja.
