All you need to know about UTAMU, the Sole University that conducts learning online in Uganda

Uganda Technology And Management University (UTAMU) has posed a need for other Universities and Education Institutions to adopt the Online learning and teaching system.

During the DOUBLE TALK interview with Kabuubi Media Africa, Prof. Dr. Eddy Kurobuza Tukamushaba the Vice Chancellor of Uganda Technology And Management University at his Office in Bugolobi, Kampala-Uganda stressed many education institutions went through tough times when they were closed by President Museveni following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic hence destabilizing their systematic learning programs.

 Dr. Tukamushaba admits that, UTAMU unlike others was not affected as they fore learnt it that there is need for embracing technological learning and teaching in this 21st century. While other institutions were disorganized during the surge of the coronavirus pandemic, we continued with studies as well as holding graduation ceremonies uninterrupted.

For example, UTAMU successfully held its 6th graduation Ceremony on  the 24th September 2021, the new Chancellor Mr. Patrick Bitature  handed over Certificates, Diplomas and Degrees to Students in different disciplines.

He cited Masters in  monitoring and evaluation in School Humanities and Social Sciences has over years registered a big number of graduates and as well as other schools like Business Administration, Computing and Engineering, Education and Technical Vocation are . The University website is:

Prof. Dr. Tukamushaba admits that the University is adopting the “Blended” way of learning after Universities were opened to enable some students from within Kampala to access the University premises and use the available resources like free internet and the computer laboratory as well  as interacting directly with the lecturers while other students remain Online.

An extra hour will be  for those Online to seek clarification on the subject matter or other inquiries.

UTAMU is committed to handle blended teaching in full compliance of Standard Operating Procedures as outlined by Ministry of Health and the National Covid-19 Task Force.

However, the University will prioritize allow Freshers of September in-take to attend physically in a bid to orient them on different university teaching and learning opportunities available. This however, is for those who have the capacity of accessing the University premises putting in consideration that there are other students who enroll from abroad and far areas of Uganda that are oriented online still.

On exams, Dr. Tukamushaba stresses that all students will be required to come to the University premises physically, on a case by case basis given the current curfew restrictions. Largely, most exams will continue to be done through the excellent E-Learning platform to cater for  the  students from abroad.

 

It will be remembered that, the President of Uganda HE. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni during his recent address noted that  that all tertiary institution should fully re-open but with proper compliance of established Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures and it’s on this note that the Vice Chancellor of this University  in partnership with nearby Kiswa KCCA Health  will work together in case of emergencies.

Kiswa HC  Promised to  carry out Vaccination   of these Students on the Premises of this University since they are likely to be in big numbers.

Uganda Technology And Management University (UTAMU) was established in 2013 after receiving a  license from National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to award Certificates, Bachelors, Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and PhD levels with three Intakes in January, May and September.The  University majorly focuses on technology and management services highly investing in Research and Partnerships with Alumni and other institutions.

Prof. Tukamushaba, also added that , the University has graduated over 3000 students in different disciplines and over 200 students have enrolled for this year’s In-take.

Besides being  the VC, Prof.  Tukamusaba  is the University and the caretaker Dean of School of Business.  He has a rich education background.Prior to being appointed as a Vice Chancellor, he was an Associate Professor of Stenden University  of Applied Sciences in Qatar.

He joined Higher Education Teaching in December 2001 as a  teaching assistant  after obtaining a First Class honors degree in Tourism.He was  later promoted to a lecturer after completing a Masters in Business Administration-Marketing  before being elevated to head of the department Leisure and Hospitality for two years at Makerere University Business School.
