Boris Johnson is talking tough against racism. The UK Prime minister condemned the racist abuse against England's football players following their Euro 2020 final defeat to Italy. "[The England footballers] really do represent the best of our country. And I repeat, that I utterly condemn and abhor the racist outpourings that we saw on Sunday night. And so what we are doing is today taking practical steps to ensure that the football banning order regime is changed so that if you are guilty, Mr Speaker, of racist abuse online of footballers then you will not be going to the match", Johnson said. While speaking in the UK Houses of Parliament, Johnson adds that social media networks will be fined if they fail to remove racist content from their various platforms. "Last night I me...

Dorcas Muhwezi, MTN General Manager Customer Experience  Unlike the earlier days where customers sneakily wrote their views on paper and dropped them into suggestion boxes hoping that no one would recognize their handwriting, today, customers take to social media to publicly appreciate and also vent their frustration. We Can’t Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals without the Internet

INTERNET, TECHNOLOGY, UN, UNDP
This week I had the opportunity to participate in a session of the High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development—the United Nation’s central point of discussion of the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This was a timely opportunity to discuss paths towards a sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We need the Internet in this endeavor. It’s difficult to imagine living through the pandemic without the Internet. Researchers would have faced even greater challenges both in working to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and collaborating on the development of vaccines. It also had a profound impact on the lives of people who had access, giving many the option to work from home and continue their education. But the first year of the pandemic has le...

About 30 years ago, I received an invitation to minister for a week in a new church being planted in Kasubi. The church was a peel away from another church located in Nakulabye led by a friend of mine and village-mate Steven Ssozi, who went to be with the Lord some years ago. Elders of what was then called Heritage Church had protested the Pastoral leadership of Ssozi, who had changed the ministry and surrendered to another leader. This group of elders told me about a young Pastor under the Heritage ministry who was doing a good job in a village called Zengebe - Lwampanga, Nakasongola. They said he was the right person to come to Kampala and lead the remnant members of the scattered Heritage Church. They later on brought Stephen Ssenfuma to me and invited me to speak for a week to the ...

Dear Fellow South African, We are now in the midst of a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. We may be tired of this persistent enemy, but it is not yet tired of us. The threat to health and lives is evident as people become ill and some die. So we must do what we can, as individuals, as families and communities, as unions and employers, and as government, to limit the toll. When the virus surges to this extent, the economy also faces challenges. Workers have to isolate or quarantine, people stop going out for recreation or shopping, tourism comes to a standstill, and workplaces have to spend more money to prevent infections. It is incorrect to speak about a trade-off between lives and livelihoods. Rather, we need to invest our time, effort and resources to control the pandemic t...
