Kenya: The accident took place in the Ratili area along the Narok-Bomet Highway as the driver was heading towards Bomet.

Following the tyre burst, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which rolled several times, leading to the tragic outcome. The driver was among the casualties.

Narok County Commander Riko Ngare confirmed to the press that the tyre burst caused the accident. He added that the vehicle veered off the road, rolled over, and killed nine people on the spot.

In the accident, six men, two women, and one underage female lost their lives, while others sustained minor and major injuries.

All injured passengers were rushed to Longisa County Referral Hospital, and the bodies were taken to Longisa Mortuary for autopsy and preservation.

A medic at the hospital informed the Nation that one of the victims with major injuries had succumbed, bringing the total number of fatalities to 10.

Following the accident, the damaged Public Service Vehicle was towed to the nearby police station.

This incident adds to other accidents reported across the country in the past week. On Thursday, five people died in an accident involving three matatus in Gilgil, Nakuru County. The accident occurred after one of the matatus lost control and rammed into the other two, resulting in fatalities. The bodies were taken to the morgue, while 20 others who sustained injuries were rushed to the hospital.

Statistics from the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) indicate that 1,679 people died in road accidents from May to June this year, a decrease from the number recorded in the same period in 2022.

Major causes of these accidents include losing control, wrong overtaking, speeding, and tyre bursts.
