Police in Kanungu are searching for suspects involved in the assault of a 28-year-old man, Ashrafu Namara, who later died from his injuries.

Namara, a resident of Kasiro cell, Town Ward, Kihihi Town Council in Kanungu district, was allegedly attacked on Monday evening around 8:00 PM. According to his mother, Tumushabe Aisha (57), Namara called her during the attack, stating he was being beaten by a man named Saddam and six other boys from Rutenga village.

Aisha, who was at the bus park ready to travel to Kampala, immediately returned home and informed Namara’s brother, Hamidu, to check on him.

Hamidu encountered a group of people wielding sticks as he approached the scene. He also saw that Namara’s clothes had been removed. The suspects chased Hamidu, who managed to escape and alert his other brother, Niwabaine Kraishi.

Together, Hamidu and Kraishi found Namara crawling in critical condition and carried him home. Namara identified Saddam and other boys from Rutenga, who resided at Saddam’s house, as his attackers. Unfortunately, Namara died on the way to the hospital.

The Kigezi Police Spokesperson, ASP Elly Maate, confirmed that the police were notified by Aisha and a team was dispatched to document the crime scene. Witness statements were recorded, a post-mortem examination was conducted, and the body was released to the family for burial.

A murder case by assault (CRB 180/2024) has been registered at Kihihi Police Station. A manhunt for the suspects is ongoing, and further investigations are underway.
