Lands Ministry, PELUM Uganda take Land Awareness Compaign to Kigezi Sub region

Kampala, Uganda: Ministry of lands has partnerned with Participatory Ecological Land Use Management (PELUM) and other actors to faclitate Kigezi Sub Region in the 6th Land Awareness Week. This will happen on the 22-26th day of August 2022 in districts of Kabale, Rubanda, Rukiga Kanungu and Kisoro under the Theme“Promoting Land Rights for Inclusive and Sustainable Development.”
The latter will provide a basis for citizens to get knowledge and information regarding their land rights and management obligations adding to providing legal clinics.

Speaking to press yesterday, Dennis Obbo, the spokesperson for Ministry of Lands, Housing and Urban Development an overwhelming public outcry regarding genuine ownership of land as most of them lack legal assistance which put their living at a risk of eviction.

He says, Lands Ministry for that matter partners with line non state actors to traverse the country  gathering pressing issues from communities that help them devise sustaibly possible solutions for the aggrieved.
He added, the campaign will also zero on senstizing the Batwa community on knowing their entitled rights on land as well helping them in legal matters as special interest group that has been for long been oppressed.

Josephine Akia, the Country Coordinator for Pelum Uganda, informed that in partnership with Lands Ministry of they are looking at performing different activities like community sensitizations & dialogues on land rights, land laws & environmental conservation, mobile legal clinics, district & national level planning meetings,radio talk shows on topical issues, music exhibition, TV live debate, tree planting, media engagements, petition by special interest groups and climax ceremony by minister.

She said, the Week will create strategic  platform for documentation of issues to inform policy review relating to the National Land Policy, 2013, the Land Act CAP. 227, the Land Acquisition Act-1965 and the Physical Planning Act-2010 among others.
The Week will also look at documenting and consolidating community voices  into the “LAW 2022 Asks/memorandum” which will then be presented to the government for subsequent action.
Brief history of Land Awareness Week.
This was first implemented by the organizational leadership of PELUM Uganda, Oxfam, FRA, LANDnet, ActionAid, Trocaire, ESAFF and MLHUD in 2017 in Amuru district covering 12 locations and reaching over 1,200 stakeholders.
National events followed in Teso region in 2018 covering over seven districts and reaching over 4,700 stakeholders, Karamoja region in 2019 reaching over 4,800 stakeholders, West Nile region in 2020 reaching over 4,200 stakeholders, Central region in 2021 reaching over 4,200 stakeholders. and the current one to be held in South Western region 2022.
