Liverpool are in danger of “getting left behind” unless they follow up Manchester City’s signing of Erling Haaland with one of their own, according to Jamie O’Hara.
Man City announced recently that they had agreed a deal with Borussia Dortmund to sign Haaland for £51m this summer with many claiming it will take Pep Guardiola’s side to an untouchable level.
The Citizens have managed without a centre-forward for much of the season but are still likely to be crowned Premier League champions as they head into the final day of the season with their destiny in their own hands.
Are Manchester City failures if they beat Liverpool to the Premier League title?
Liverpool could close the gap on City to one point when they play Southampton on Tuesday but former Tottenham midfielder O’Hara thinks they will be further behind City domestically next season unless they bring in a huge signing.
O’Hara said on talkSPORT: “I think that they’ve got to react to the fact that Man City have signed [Erling] Haaland.
“That’s the final piece to the jigsaw, you’d say. Man City are going to probably win the Premier League without a striker, really.
“They’ve played most of the season without one.
“When you bring in Haaland who, for me, is going to be a complete superstar in the Premier League, Liverpool have to react and bring in someone big as well because otherwise I feel that they will end up getting left behind.
“Man City have spent £100million on Grealish and you’d have to say that hasn’t been the best signing that they could have made, but they’re going to win the Premier League.
“When you bring in Haaland, now you’re talking. That is a big step up in quality, for me. That’s one hell of a signing and Liverpool need to react to that.”
However, one person that doesn’t agree with O’Hara’s take is former England and Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham, who reckons the signing of Haaland strikes him as a bit like the one that has seen Romelu Lukaku flop at Chelsea.
“I think it could be a little Lukaku-ish with Chelsea. I’m not sure….I mean, I’m sure he’s in safe hands. I love Pep Guardiola,” Sheringham told Stadium Astro.
“Haaland is more of a player when he breaks away and gets his legs going, striding beyond defenders.
“When you play for Man City, you’re camped in on the edge of their area so you’ve got to be able to feed balls into your centre-forwards and I’m not sure that’s one of his assets.”
