Al Ahly confirm Riveiro deal.
Al Ahly have appointed Jose Riveiro as their new head coach just one day after winning a record 45th Egyptian Premier League title.
The Red Eagles were crowned champions on Wednesday following a 6-0 thrashing of 10-man Pharco as they pipped Pyramids to top spot by two points in the final round of the Championship Group.
Emad El Nahhas had taken charge of their final six games on an interim basis after Marcel Koller was sacked on April 27 in the wake of his team’s exit from the CAF Champions League at the semi-final stages.
Riveiro reportedly agreed a deal with the Cairo giants in February and brought a successful three-year tenure with Orlando Pirates to an end on May 13.
The Spaniard won five trophies during his time at Mayfair, including a record-breaking three straight MTN 8 titles and he guided the Buccaneers to a second-placed finish in the Betway Premiership this season.
Riveiro has joined the 12-time African champions on a two-year contract and will begin work immediately to prepare them for the 2025 Club World Cup which takes place in the United States from June 14 to July 13.
“We are delighted to announce that Al Ahly and Jose Riveiro have reached an agreement for the Spanish to become men’s first team football coach,” the club announced in a statement on Thursday.
