Kasese ,Uganda: Tragic floods have swept through Kasese Municipality, affecting at least four villages in Nyamwamba Division.
The Uganda Red Cross Society reports that approximately 1,000 households have been affected, with over 250 households completely submerged.
The river, originating from the mountain Rwenzori, surged dramatically into Kasese town, resulting in significant damage with reports indicating two individuals reported dead so far in the tragedy and several homes submerged by the floods as business came to a standstill in the area.
One woman is feared to have drowned in the floodwaters.”Response Action Teams (RCATs) and the District Disaster Management Committee (DDMC) are conducting a rapid assessment to have a detailed situational report,” said Irene Nakasiita, Uganda Red Cross Society spokesperson.
Nakasiita added that the search for missing individuals is underway, with RCATs and DDMC teams working closely with the Village Task Force comprising community responders.
The flash floods were triggered by a heavy downpour on Saturday, causing River Nyamwamba to burst its banks.
