President Yoweri Museveni has issued a stern warning to individuals posing threats to coffee farmers, emphasizing that he will take decisive action against them. His cautionary statement came during his visit to assess the progress of the Inspire Africa Coffee factory project in Rwashamaire town council, Ntungamo district, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024.

The President’s remarks were prompted by comments made by Nelson Tugume, the director of Inspire Africa Coffee Group, who highlighted ongoing challenges faced by coffee farmers. “We are at war with many people; some people think we are taking their lunch,” Tugume expressed to President Museveni during the inspection.

President Museveni underscored the importance of unity in advancing the coffee industry, referring to the endeavor as “Chapter One” in the battle for the nation’s coffee prosperity. He emphasized the need to halt the exploitation of Africa’s resources, particularly in the coffee sector, where unprocessed coffee exports yield significantly lower returns compared to processed coffee.

In efforts to enhance Uganda’s coffee value chain, the government initiated the Coffee Investment Consortium Uganda (CICU) in 2023. This consortium aims to boost export revenue from coffee, generate employment, and elevate farm gate prices. Through the Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) Secretariat, the government allocated resources to establish a modern industrial coffee park in Rwashamaire town council, with construction currently at 60% completion.

President Museveni expressed satisfaction with the factory’s progress and pledged additional support to ensure its timely completion. He affirmed his commitment to provide the necessary resources for the project’s fulfillment, following discussions with Tugume regarding the requirements for its completion.

Encouraging unity among Ntungamo residents, President Museveni emphasized the significance of supporting and collaborating with Tugume to bolster both local and national economies. Dr. Monica Musenero, Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, conveyed gratitude to the President for his interest in overseeing the project’s advancement.

In response, Tugume expressed gratitude to President Museveni for his unwavering support, acknowledging the transformative impact the coffee factory will have on the region’s economy. He urged Ntungamo residents to rally behind the initiative, highlighting the potential benefits in terms of employment opportunities and economic upliftment. The visit to the factory garnered significant attention from various stakeholders, including ministers, Members of Parliament, local leaders, coffee farmers, and religious figures.
