Several students were among the passengers who were involved in a road accident on Kikima-Machakos road on Monday, May 13.

This was after the matatu they were travelling in lost control and rolled severally at Kwa Mbisu, Nthungoni area in Makueni County.

The passengers were rushed to Mbooni Sub County Hospital where they are currently receiving treatment.

At the time of reporting, no fatalities had been confirmed from the accident.

The accident happened when students were going back to school after an extended holiday due to floods that were experienced in the country.

Kwa Mbisu area is a known hotspot in the area with 12 people having lost their lives at the exact spot a few months ago.

Mirroring today’s accident, the December 16, 2023, incident also involved a 14-seater matatu that also lost control.

At the time, it was reported that the driver of the matatu was carrying excess passengers. It was also said to have been overspeeding.

The National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) urged drivers to proceed with caution during this school opening season.

This is due to the heavy downpour experienced in almost every part of the country that rendered most roads slippery and impassable.

Additionally, NTSA launched a nationwide crackdown with the aim of impounding unroadworthy vehicles, especially school buses.

According to NTSA, 7,198 Kenyans lost their lives in the first four months of 2024 with the majority being pedestrians.
