Uganda is set to host the Commonwealth Speakers and Presiding Officers’ Conference from January 3 to January 6 at the Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo in Kampala. The conference, secured by Uganda in 2020 during a sitting in Ottawa, Canada, has received confirmation from at least 43 speakers and presiding officers.
Despite the absence of a clear list of participating countries and reasons for non-attendance, Speaker Anita Among assured the public that Uganda is well-prepared for the event. The country faced criticism, sanctions, and withdrawal from trade deals with Western countries, including the US, due to various issues, including the passing of the Anti-Homosexuality Bill.
Addressing a press conference, Speaker Anita Among revealed that invitations were extended to 73 speakers and presiding officers. The first batch of participants has already arrived, with the official opening scheduled for January 4 at Munyonyo Speak Resort, featuring the support of the country’s President.
Ms. Among emphasized the networking opportunities the conference presents, highlighting the importance of collaboration with other Commonwealth countries to advance Uganda’s global interests. She urged Ugandan businesses and interest groups to leverage the event for building commercial networks and attracting investors.
