Two dead, scores injured in nasty road crash at Namboole

Kampala, (UG): At least two people died on the spot and several others currently nursing critical injuries after the driver of a trailer lost control and rammed into 13 motor vehicles at Namboole roundabout in Kira Municipality on Thursday evening.

The 7:00 pm accident involved the trailer of Reg. UBD 520H Fuso Box Body, thirteen (13) other cars & two (02) Motorcycles happened this evening 7/12/2023 on the Northern Bypass- Namboole Round, according to a statement by the Spokesperson of Traffic and Road Safety, SP Michael Kananura this evening.

Kananura explained that initial reports from first responders indicated that the driver of M/V Reg No UBD 520H which transporting maize from Nalaya to Namboole, “lost control at the roundabout, failed to brake, and rammed with 13 cars and 02 motorcycles, resulting in the loss of two lives.”

 

 

He said the identities of the victims were yet to be known by press time following the incident at the black spot where heavy trucks often ram into other vehicles.

“The deceased persons include; 01 female Passenger on a motorcycle & a male yet to be identified,” he said, adding that an “unspecified number of people were also injured and rushed to Gwatilo & Mulago Hospitals for treatment while the two dead bodies were also conveyed to Mulago City mortuary.”

Meanwhile, the Motor vehicles which were involved in the accident have been towed to Bweyogere Police Station pending Inspection.

Kananura said investigations into the cause of the crash have kicked off and the hunt for the Fuso driver who is on the run has also commenced.

The Thursday fatal crash reminisces the memories of the worst accident at the same spot which occurred in the late 1990s after a minibus with 14 passengers failed to brake and ended in a trench that had been dug across the road.
