Policeman shoots self dead in Kassanda

KASSANDA, UGANDA: Police in Kassanda district are investigating circumstances under which a police officer allegedly shot himself dead on Tuesday morning.

The deceased identified as Police Constable, Alex Kitiyo, 47 attached to Makokoto police station in Kassanda district allegedly turned the gun to himself in an incident that happened at around 5 am this morning, according to Wamala region police spokesperson, APS Racheal Kawala.

“Preliminary facts indicate that today at about 500am at Makokota trading centre Police constable Kitiyo woke up and shot several bullets into the room of his in charge police post, IP John Kakooza while not talking anything, then he later returned to his room sat on his bed and shot himself dead,” Kawala said.

Ms Wamala said the scene was visited and documented by police whereas relevant statements are being recorded to guide investigations.

The incident follows a series of similar incidents in which police officers are taking their own life.
For example last year, AIP George William Kaweesi, a police officer attached to the Field Force Unit in Buliisa district turned the gun onto himself inside the police barracks.

Statement on the Kassanda Shooting Incident

The Kassanda Territorial Police have recorded a tragic incident involving attempted murder and suicide by shooting at Makokoto Police Post in Makokoto Sub County, Kassanda District.
The deceased individual has been identified as No. 1037 PC Kitiyo Alex, a 47-year-old male adult and resident of Makokoto Trading Center. PC Kitiyo was a police officer attached to the Makokoto Police Post in Kassanda District.
Based on preliminary information, on May 24th, 2023, at approximately 5:00 am, PC Kitiyo allegedly woke up and fired several shots into the room of his superior officer, Inspector of Police John Kakooza, without uttering any words.
Following the incident, PC Kitiyo returned to his own room, sat on his bed, and subsequently took his own life.
Our task team has visited and thoroughly documented the scene of the crime. We are currently in the process of obtaining relevant statements to aid in the ongoing investigation.
