ABUJA, NIGERIA, 24th February 2023 (OFPP) – The Acting United Nations Special Representative of the Secretary-General for West Africa and the Sahel Ms, Giovanie Biha, on Thursday 23rd 2023 paid a courtesy call to H.E. President Uhuru Kenyatta who is in Nigeria as a lead observer under the African Union Election Observers Mission (AUEOM).
The two leaders deliberated on the role of the United Nations in supporting the Nigeria National Peace Committee to oversee a peaceful and democratic election. They underscored the critical role the two institutions played during the election period in Nigeria.
H.E. (Rtd) Uhuru Kenyatta also met with the former Nigeria President Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar and the head of the National Peace Committee.
H.E. Kenyatta lauded the Peace Accord as it assures the people of the Federla Republic of Nigeria a peaceful, free and credible election.
On his part, former President Abubakar thanked H.E. Kenyatta for his work and commitment to the African continent and added that H.E. Kenyatta’s presence in the country greatly encouraged the people of Nigeria.
Later, H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta held bilateral talks with the Commonwealth Secretary-General, Patricia Scotland KC who reiterated the full support of the Commonwealth towards a successful electoral process in Nigeria.
