What does Wout Weghorst bring to Man United?

The budget at Old Trafford has widely reported to be a limited one this month. Overspending on the likes of Casemiro and Antony last summer has forced Ten Hag to work within his means this month.

Indeed, a lack of funds prevented Manchester United from acting on their interest in Cody Gakpo. United were also priced out of a loan move for Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix.

Instead, the Red Devils settled on the more cost-effective Wout Weghorst who may prove to be a canny addition nonetheless.

The Dutchman did little of note while with Burnley, though his goalscoring record (approx. one in two) during his spells in the Netherlands, Germany and Turkey cannot be ignored.

Elsewhere, Jack Butland’s loan arrival from Crystal Palace extinguished the fire Newcastle started when recalling Martin Dubravka.

But according to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Butland and Weghorst might be joined by a third new face before the window slams shut.

Man Utd want burst of creativity

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano reported United’s plan is to move for a “creative” player over the next 10 days.

“For Man Utd, the reality is they will look for potential creative signings in the last hours of the market,” said Romano.

Ten Hag too hinted United’s business isn’t over during a press conference on Friday.

“I think as Manchester United you always have to look for solutions,” he replied. “You always have to look for better and that is what we will do.

“We will be doing our research and if there are opportunities, we have to go for it.”

While Romano stopped short of naming who’s on United’s radar, a move for a high profile target who was recently the subject of a secret meeting could now be in play.

Marco Reus to Man Utd?

BILD’s Christian Falk recently revealed Ten Hag held a behind closed doors meeting with the agent of Borussia Dortmund superstar, Marco Reus.

United’s interest was termed ‘serious’, though Falk acknowledged there’s nothing in place as yet. However, given Romano reported United’s plan is to move later in the window, that is not all that concerning.

“Manchester United is an option for Marco Reus,” wrote Falk for CaughtOffside. “I heard there was a meeting between his agent, Dirk Hebel, and Erik ten Hag; they talked about Reus and Erik seemed to be interested.

“They have to see what happens in the summer but he’s an option as a potential free agent.

“Erik is familiar with Marco’s quality, so this will be serious. No decision yet, of course.”

Reus, 33, has entered the final six months of his deal at Dortmund and is known to be mulling his future.

There’s been speculation over a lucrative late-career move to the Middle East. However, if United were to lodge a cut-price offer, a new experience in the greatest league in the world would be difficult to ignore.

Reus is actually free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with overseas clubs given he’s entered the final six months of his deal.

That approach would allow United to sign the Germany ace for free, though he’d then arrive in the summer which will do nothing to aid their cause this season.

A transfer fee would therefore be required if United are to land Reus this month. Given his age, chequered injury record and contract situation, it stands to reason the fee required wouldn’t be large.

If Romano is correct and United do have late-window fireworks in mind, Marco Reus to Man Utd is one to keep an eye on.
