Ugandan Joshua Cheptegei ensured a thrilling return for competitive athletics on Friday as he shattered the much-vaunted 16-year-old 5,000m world record at the Monaco Diamond League. Cheptegei's astonishing display capped a warm welcome back for track and field for a season almost wiped out by the coronavirus pandemic, with fellow world champions Noah Lyles and Karsten Warholm also shining on the track. Lyles had worn a black glove on his right hand and raised his fist at the start of the 200m to show his support for recent anti-racism protests. In perfect conditions, with little wind and temperatures of 27 degrees Celsius (81F), Cheptegei clocked 12min 35.36sec to shatter Ethiopian legend Kenenisa Bekele's previous best of 12:37.35, set in 2004. A tetchy Blues back line was taken to the cleaners when the two teams met last time out, as a brace from Serge Gnabry followed by a 76th minute strike from Robert Lewandowski summed up a captivating a 3-0 win for Bayern. The German champions, owing to the form they’ve maintained since Hansi Flick’s arrival, already have one foot inside the quarter-final. Cristiano Ronaldo's hopes of finishing as Europe's top scorer were dealt a blow as he failed to score as champions Juventus were beaten by Cagliari. Ronaldo has scored an incredible 31 Serie A goals this season but found himself frustrated on Wednesday night. Luca Gagliano's close-range finish and Giovanni Simeone's powerful drive secured the win for the hosts. Ronaldo trails Lazio striker Ciro Immobile by four goals in the battle for Europe's Golden Shoe. Immobile scored his 35th goal of the season as Lazio beat Brescia 2-0 on Wednesday. With one game of the Serie A season remaining, Immobile is the outright leading scorer in Europe as his latest strike moved him ahead of Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski, who finished the Bundesliga season with 34 goals. SOCCER: Liverpool have taken Man City’s Premier League title, now they want their records – Alan Shearer

Sports
There won't be any fans inside Etihad Stadium on Thursday, but I am still expecting it to be a very lively night. Manchester City will show Liverpool great respect with a guard of honour before the game, but it will hurt Pep Guardiola and his players to have to do it, and they will want to prove a point on the pitch afterwards. The level Liverpool are at might depend on how much partying they have done since becoming Premier League champions last week. They deserved those celebrations but they have had a few days to get them out of the way, and my guess is they will want to be at their very best again when they play City. This is a big game even without any silverware riding on it. Liverpool have already taken City's title, and now they want their records too - most points, bigge...

The DFB board has decided to make changes to the upcoming transfer window for licensed and contracted players. The background to the changes is the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on football matches. "Because of the coronavirus crisis and the resulting shifts in seasons, national and international adjustments to the transfer windows are necessary, so that the previous period [1 July to 31 August 2020] had to be updated. Leicester's game against Crystal Palace at the weekend could be postponed, according to Premier League chief executive Richard Masters.  The city was confirmed as the UK's first area to be hit by a 'local lockdown' after a regional flare-up of coronavirus cases, with schools to be closed from tomorrow and the abandonment of national easing measures, set to be implemented on July 6. Rio Ferdinand says he would be "very upset" as a defender with Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson after Arsenal's last-gasp winner at the shot-stopper's loan club Sheffield United. Henderson - who has impressed for the Blades - was beaten at his near post by Dani Ceballos as the Gunners booked their place in the semi-finals of the FA Cup. It came after David McGoldrick thought he had forced extra-time by cancelling out Nicolas Pepe's opener from the penalty spot at Bramall Lane. There has been some talk Henderson could usurp David de Gea as United's No.1 next season following a string of errors by the Spaniard over the last couple of years. But Ferdinand was seemingly unimpressed by the England Under-21 international conceding the late goal. He told BT Sport: "I sp...

Real's advantage in the table, coming after Barca's draw at Celta Vigo on Saturday, is their biggest since February and puts them within sight of their second league title in eight years. "It's a very important win," said Benzema. "I can't say we don't look at Barcelona, of course we do. But we're focused on our own league. There are not many games left and every game now is a final." By the time Real play at home to Getafe on Thursday they mi...
