S.AFRICA: Committees reject water tariff increase proposals and call for further consideration of issues

Parliament, Tuesday, 28 July 2020 – A joint meeting of the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation and the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) today rejected a reconsidered presentation from the Department of Water and Sanitation and the South African Local Government Association (Salga) on proposals for the 2020/21 water tariff increase.  While the committees note the movement in finding common ground between the department, representing water boards, and Salga, the committees believe that the impact of Covid-19 on households has not been taken into enough consideration in the scenarios presented. CORONAVIRUS: Zambian MP dies of Covid-19, Parliament forced to recess.

Zambia’s Parliament has been forced to adjourn after a legislator, Mr Rogers Mwewa, recently died from coronavirus.The legislator from the North of the country recently fell ill and had tested positive for Covid-19. He died and was buried yesterday (Tuesday).The country’s Vice President, Inonge Wina, said the escalating cases of Covid-19 had necessitated adjournment of the House. Ms Wina bemoaned increasing cases of the virus despite the implementation of measures to combat its spread.The Vice President and Speaker of the National Assembly, Patrick Matibini, will on Wednesday lead other MPs in a mass testing exercise at Parliament Building clinic in Lusaka. UGANDA: Parliament legal committee examines entities afflicted to the upcoming general elections.

KAMPALA — The Parliamentary Legal Committee is interfacing with minister of constitution affairs, attorney general and electoral commission. The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Prof. Ephraim Kamuntu, in his update to Parliament on the new guidelines said government is likely not to amend the guidelines unless the situation warrants. Their summoning follows the speaker’s directive to the committee to further interface with all entities concerned with the coming general election on the matter of revised road map.
