Five dead, 21 injured in nine-car crash on Kampala-Bombo road

Kampala, March 6, 2025 – A tragic road crash at Mayanja Valley along the Kampala-Bombo Road has claimed the lives of five people and left 21 others injured.

The accident, which occurred late on the night of March 5, involved nine motor vehicles and a motorcycle, police confirmed in a statement.

According to preliminary investigations, the driver of a Fuso Super Grande (registration number UBK 769A) lost control while descending the Mayanja Valley slope.

“The vehicle, traveling from Kampala to Bombo, collided with multiple cars and a motorcycle moving in the same direction, resulting in the fatalities and injuries,” said SP Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety.

The deceased, including the motorcycle rider and four other vehicle occupants, died instantly at the scene.

Emergency responders transported the injured victims, mainly passengers from the Toyota Hiace taxis, to Mulago Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to Mulago City Mortuary for post-mortem examinations.

The crash involved a range of vehicles, including Toyota Hiace taxis (UBQ 745N, UAY 704B, UAT 652K, UBD 829G, UAV 026F, and UBD 483N), a Toyota Sienta (UBQ 062B), a Toyota Corolla (UAL 333C), and the ill-fated Fuso Super Grande truck.

A Yamaha motorcycle (UES 773K) was also involved in the collision.

Authorities have since towed the wreckage to Kawempe Police Station for further inspection as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
This incident adds to the concerning trend of road fatalities in Uganda.

In 2024, the country recorded 5,144 road traffic deaths, averaging approximately 14 fatalities daily—a 7% increase from the 4,806 deaths reported in 2023.

Notably, motorcyclists remain the most vulnerable group, with 1,720 riders losing their lives in 2024, marking a 13.2% increase from the previous year.

In a statement, Kananura urged motorists to adhere to road safety measures. “We urge all motorists to prioritize road safety by ensuring their vehicles are well-maintained, adhering to speed limits, and driving defensively to prevent such tragic incidents,” he stated.

The accident has once again highlighted the dangers of reckless driving and poor vehicle maintenance, prompting renewed calls for stricter road safety enforcement.
