Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Health have been urged to enforce stricter policies on plastic waste disposal to mitigate potential public health risks.
Kenneth Tumusiime, representing Plawaste Consult Limited, warned the committee about the dangers of burning plastic waste, stating that it significantly increases the risk of cancer and other health issues. He emphasized that while laws exist to address this, plastic burning remains prevalent, and called for nationwide awareness campaigns to educate the public on the harmful effects of plastic waste.

Committee Chairperson Joseph Ruyonga acknowledged the risks associated with plastic use, particularly in food-related products. He proposed that manufacturers be required to include warning labels on plastic containers, such as water bottles, advising against exposure to sunlight. Ruyonga also cautioned against using plastic bags for food preparation, stressing the need for clear health warnings.
