Chinese cargo ship runs aground in Russian Far East.
Sakhalin governor says Chinese cargo ship ran aground in region’s southwestern Nevelsky district, declares introduction of high alert regime due to incident.
A Chinese cargo ship ran aground in the Sakhalin region of Russia’s Far East, local authorities said early Sunday.
Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko said on Telegram that the An Yang 2 cargo ship ran aground overnight while in the shallow waters of the island’s southwestern Nevelsky district, which lies just north of Japan’s second-largest island Hokkaido.
No fuel spill was recorded in the area, Limarenko said.
There is no threat to the life and health of the crew, he noted, adding that they are in constant contact with them.
Limarenko further said a high alert regime has been introduced in Nevelsky due to the incident, expressing that rescue and diving services are unable to approach the ship due to a strong storm.
“Decisions on unloading the vessel or removing it from the shallows will be made as soon as the weather conditions improve,” he went on to say.
Russia’s Federal Agency for Sea and Inland Water Transport told the state news agency TASS that the vessel has no fuel oil as cargo, but is loaded with 1,000 tons of coal.
TASS also reported that the crew of the ship is made up of 20 Chinese citizens, citing a statement by the regional government’s press service.
