Putin and Tajik president to discuss Afghanistan amid regional concerns.

The meeting will take place in the Leningrad region, Yuri Ushakov, a senior aide to Mr. Putin, told reporters. He said the two leaders would convene at the Igora resort complex, located near St. Petersburg.

“The president will host President Rahmon on the evening of December 24 at the Igora complex,” Mr. Ushakov said.

The talks are expected to focus on bilateral relations, regional security issues, and Afghanistan, Mr. Ushakov said, with the topic of migration also high on the agenda.

“The leaders will discuss migration issues and the broader state of our country’s current situation in a private and calm setting,” he added, suggesting that a more intimate atmosphere was chosen for the meeting.

The summit comes as leaders from across the Commonwealth of Independent States and the Eurasian Economic Union are set to gather for informal meetings in the same region on Wednesday and Thursday, further underscoring the importance of the discussions.

The meeting between Mr. Putin and Mr. Rahmon reflects growing regional concern over Afghanistan, where instability and security issues have prompted neighboring countries to seek closer cooperation.
