Nancy Pelosi hospitalised after hip injury during Luxembourg trip.

Former US House Speaker is in Grand Duchy for series of events to mark the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge during Second World War.

Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been hospitalised after being injured during a congressional trip to Luxembourg, her office announced on Friday in a statement.

Pelosi, 84, fractured her hip and will require a routine operation, the New York Times reported, adding that the accident happened at the Grand Ducal Palace when she was going down the marble staircase, after the US delegation had been received by the Grand Duke in the palace.

Representative Derrick Van Orden, a Wisconsin Republican, said he was near the former speaker when she fell.

“It’s not appropriate for me to comment on her medical condition, and I wish her the very best,” he said on the social media platform X.

Pelosi spokesman Ian Krager didn’t provide any details on her condition, the injury or how it occurred in the statement, except that she sustained the injury during “an official engagement” of the congressional delegation, which marked the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.

Pelosi was admitted to a hospital and “is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said. She “continues to work” but is “unable to attend” the remaining events on the trip.

Pelosi was transported across the border to the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, a US military hospital, in Rhineland-Palatinate for treatment, according to CNN, citing a defence official.

Many of the congressional delegation members had relatives who fought in World War II, including Pelosi’s uncle, Johnny, Krager said.

Pelosi, the first and only woman to be US House Speaker, stepped down from the post in 2022, saying she wanted to make way for a new generation of Democratic legislative leaders.

Pelosi worked behind to the scenes to encourage and guide Democratic lawmakers as they pressed President Joe Biden to drop his re-election bid earlier this year, highlighting her enduring influence in the party.
