Dr. Kizza Besigye’s legal team addresses journalists after a court session where Besigye and his co-accused, Haji Obeid Lutale, were further remanded to Luzira Prison until December 10, 2024
KAMPALA – Martha Karua, the Kenyan lawyer representing Retired Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Abeid Lutaale has Monday, December 2, 2024 protested the rigorous body searches she underwent at the General Court Martial.
Karua, who was searched at the gate, entrance of the court, and inside the courtroom, questioned the necessity of the repeated searches, especially after other court users had been barred from bringing bags and gadgets beyond the first checkpoint.
The lawyer also expressed frustration over being denied audience by the court due to her lack of a practicing license from the Uganda Law Council.
Karua argued that the charges against Besigye and Lutaale, which include unlawful possession of ammunition and firearms, were committed in Kenya and Greece, and therefore outside Uganda’s jurisdiction.
Besigye and Lutaale were remanded to Luzira Prison until December 10, 2024. The pair is accused of holding meetings in Athens, Geneva, and Nairobi to fundraise and mobilize resources against Uganda’s security.
Karua vowed to explore all legal options to secure justice for her clients and threatened to file a case in the East African Court of Justice against Uganda and Kenya over what she described as “illegal conduct.”
