No, Taylor Swift’s Cowboy Boots Are Not A Trump Endorsement
Taylor Swift is known for planting not so subtle Easter eggs in her wardrobe – things like stopped clocks and snakeskin boots, that are said to hint at whatever album she is releasing or re-releasing next. The race to decode these hidden clues has become a sport for observers of pop culture – see: here, here and here – but the general public, desperate for meaning, have bought too easily into the concept, demanding that every pap shot and red-carpet outfit must reveal some hidden message.
The musician was photographed yesterday evening at the Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas, where she watched boyfriend Travis Kelce and the Chiefs compete against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Swift wore a vintage Chiefs bomber jacket, a knitted Mugler bodysuit, high-waisted Agolde shorts and knee-high Christian Louboutin cowboy boots – an item of clothing many middle-American right-wingers might like to claim as their own despite also being a ubiquitous presence in contemporary pop music. The Daily Mail framed this as a “snub” to Kamala Harris, who was hosting a closing rally in Pennsylvania ahead of tomorrow’s election. Which is, of course, fake news.
Though an on-stage cameo from Swift would have been beneficial to the Democrat’s presidential run, the musician has been explicit in her support of the VP. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” Swift said on Instagram after fabricated images depicting her endorsing Donald Trump’s campaign were circulated. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF and a woman’s right to her own body for decades.”
