JUST IN: Former KCCA Top Officials Granted Bail Amid Kiteezi Landfill Tragedy Case.
Dorothy Kisaka, David Luyimbazi, and Dr. Daniel Okello, former top executives of the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), have been granted bail by the Kasangati Chief Magistrate’s Court.
The trio faces charges including manslaughter and negligence in relation to the Kiteezi landfill tragedy that claimed 35 lives and injured 21 others.
The bail application hearing took place today, November 4, 2024, after the defense team filed a formal application for bail.
The prosecution alleges that the former KCCA officials neglected their duties, leading to the tragic collapse of the Kiteezi landfill on August 10, 2024.
The charges against them include 34 counts of manslaughter, alternative charges of causing death by reckless or negligent acts, and additional charges of causing harm through similar negligence.
President Yoweri Museveni had earlier directed the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to investigate the trio following their dismissal from their positions at KCCA.
This move came after the President’s decision to fire them due to the tragedy.
The granting of bail to the former KCCA officials has raised questions about the potential outcome of the trial and the implications for accountability in public service.
Charges Against the Accused:
– 34 counts of manslaughter
– Alternative charges of causing death by reckless or negligent acts
– Additional charges of causing harm through similar negligence
