Taliban carry out public flogging in Ghazni.
Taliban publicly flogged a man in Ghazni Province on charges of engaging in an extramarital affair, according to a statement from the Taliban’s Supreme Court on Sunday.
The man received 39 lashes in Qarabagh District, the statement said, but did not provide further detail.
Over the past month, more than 80 people, including women, have reportedly been flogged in public across various provinces on charges ranging from theft to moral “offenses.”
A recent United Nations report documented 111 cases of public lashings carried out by the Taliban from July to September, including 95 men, 15 women, and one girl. The U.N. report, which detailed corporal punishments nationwide, noted that these punishments have become increasingly frequent.
Last month, the U.N. Human Rights Council condemned the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment and called for an immediate halt to these practices. Amnesty International also expressed alarm, citing the lack of fair legal procedures in Taliban-run courts as a serious human rights concern.
