Taliban carry out public flogging in Faryab

Taliban publicly flogged a person in Faryab province in northern Afghanistan on Sunday, marking the latest in a series of corporal punishments carried out since their return to power.

In a statement, the Taliban-run Supreme Court said the individual was convicted of “adultery” by a primary court in Dawlat Abad district and sentenced to 35 lashes and four months in prison.

Over the past month, the Taliban have publicly flogged at least 70 people, including women, across several provinces, in punishments that have drawn widespread condemnation from the United Nations, Amnesty International, and other human rights groups.

International critics have denounced the Taliban’s use of corporal punishment, describing it as a violation of basic human rights.
