The U.S. has slapped sanctions on a leading figure in Sudan’s military who has been at the center of weapons deals fueling a conflict that has triggered humanitarian crises, White House officials said Thursday.
Mirghani Idris Suleiman is the director of Defense Industries Systems, the Sudanese army’s primary procurement arm.
He “has led its effort to procure weapons and expand the war,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement. “The Sudanese armed forces have prioritized weapons acquisition, including procuring drones from Iran and Russia, rather than heeding calls for peace.”
“This costly war has featured widespread attacks on civilians and public infrastructure. More than 11 million Sudanese people have been displaced and over 21 million face acute hunger,” Mr. Miller said. “The Sudanese people deserve peace, justice and a return to civilian government.”
