Andre Onana receives heroic reception in Uganda ahead of Kenya vs Cameroon rematch
Cameroon’s national football team arrived in Uganda on Saturday, ready for their second match against Kenya.
The Indomitable Lions will take on the Harambee Stars at the Mandela Stadium on Monday in the neighbouring country, looking to seal their place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations
Onana gets warm welcome in Uganda
Andre Onana received a heroic reception at the airport, with the goalkeeper getting mobbed by fans.
Onana is a popular name in football circles with the club he plays for, making him a darling for many fans. The Manchester United goalkeeper is one of the many star attractions in the Cameroon side.
It is the second time in as many months that the 2023 Champions League finalist has travelled to Uganda for the AFCON games. Last month, Zimbabwe played Cameroon in Uganda, with many fans turning up to cheer on Onana.
Why Kenya vs Cameroon will be played without fans
It is one of the factors that led the Football Kenya Federation(FKF) to decide to play the Monday encounter behind closed doors.
“You know what happened when Zimbabwe played there against Cameroon? There were a lot of security concerns. You saw what happened with goalkeeper Andre Onana, so we had no positive feedback from the other side in regards to what can happen,” said head coach Engin Firat while addressing local media.
Harambee Stars dimmed in Cameroon
Firat will be looking to right the wrongs of the first leg on Friday, where Harambee Stars were convincingly beaten 4-1.
Goals from Vincent Aboubakar, Martin Hongla, Bryan Mbeumo, and Christian Bassogog saw Marc Brys’ side get a comfortable win despite the push and pull with the country’s federation.
There will be calls for goalkeeper Patrick Matasi to be dropped after the Kenya Police custodian conceded some cheap goals.
