Trump floats “fair deal” for Russia and Ukraine, forgetting one invaded the other

As Kamala Harris inspected the US-Mexico border on Friday, her election opponent met Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelensky. Trump insisted he had a “very good relationship” not only with Zelensky but also with Vladimir Putin and wanted to see a “fair deal” between Ukraine and Russia – refusing later to explain what kind of a deal could that be, as it was “too early to say”.

But it didn’t seem too early for Trump to promise that, if he has a “good victory”, he can “work out something that’s good for both sides” long before January 20. It’s the second time Zelensky has been involved in a Trump election campaign.

Five years ago, in July 2019, he had a phone call with Trump who urged him to investigate Hunter Biden, son of the then-vice presidential frontrunner Joe Biden.

It was clear the release of US military aid to Ukraine was now conditional on this investigation. In December 2019, Trump was impeached by the Democrat-held House of Representatives but was cleared later in the trial.

Meeting Zelensky last Friday, Trump praised his handling of the issue. Which means, he didn’t forget.
