A Russian Orion reconnaissance drone from the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS) reportedly crashed near the city of Taganrog, according to several Telegram channels.
The crash, which occurred near a military airfield, resulted in a small explosion.
The drone, which is believed to have been heading toward Ukraine, lost control and crashed into a warehouse storing lumber.
Footage published by Russian media shows the moment the Orion drone struck the warehouse, with the vehicle seemingly losing altitude before impact. Analysts believe a technical malfunction was the likely cause of the crash.
The Orion UAV is one of Russia’s newest unmanned aerial systems, boasting a wingspan of 16 meters and a length of 8 meters. It has a maximum takeoff weight of 1 tonne and can carry a payload of up to 200 kg. Designed for both reconnaissance and strike missions, the Orion can reach altitudes of up to 7.5 kilometers and maintain flight for 24 hours with a standard payload. It is capable of speeds up to 200 km/h, making it one of the most advanced drones in Russia’s arsenal.
This is not the first time that reconnaissance drones have crashed in the area. Several similar incidents have occurred, with the drones being actively used by the VKS in military operations against Ukraine. The recurring crashes raise questions about the reliability of Russia’s unmanned systems, particularly in high-stakes military operations.
