A Senior East African Community (EAC) Diplomat, Dr Caroline Asiimwe, has been arrested in Kenya.

Asiimwe, who is the Executive Secretary of the Kiswahili Commission, was detained at Mombasa International Airport on Sunday night.

The circumstances for her arrest remain unclear.

Efforts to obtain a comment from the Kenyan police early Monday morning were yet to bear fruit.

However, officials said Dr Asiimwe’s detention was “in total disregard of the Diplomatic immunity she enjoys as an EAC diplomat and Executive.”

ChimpReports has learned that Dr Asiimwe was traveling on official business to attend an EAC meeting scheduled to open this Monday morning in Mombasa.

On arrival at the airport, she was arrested by Kenyan security services.

Her arrest has sent shock waves among staff of EAC and brings to question whether partner states respect various protocols they are party to.

“The Kenya Police must issue a statement on the detention of this senior diplomat,” said a source who preferred anonymity to speak freely.

Dr Asiimwe is a researcher and promoter of Kiswahili within the EAC region.

Earlier this year, Asiimwe, who also has been teaching at Makerere University, appealed to member states to develop capacity intervention programs plus strategic guidelines on how the language is supposed to be used to realize their dream of making Kiswahili an official language.
