The incident occurred in White Plains, New York
A Tesla is reported to have “exploded like a bomb” following a crash which killed two women in White Plains, New York.
The two women, Millie Sheehan (70) and her daughter-in-law, Diana Sheehan (36), were killed after the car reportedly hit a curb then a tree before crashing into an apartment building at around 9:10am on Monday morning.
Police say that neither woman was able to escape the burning car.
Nobody was in the apartment when the accident occurred and emergency responders had to pull the burning vehicle out of the building using a tow line.
Zaneta Williams, who lives in the apartment, had just left for work before the crash happened.
“My son’s room is the room that was completely blown out,” she said.
“He’s back in college, so thank God he’s not here.”
A resident told CBS NY that emergency services hosed the vehicle down once they had pulled it onto the road, however it was “still smoking hot” – it then exploded.
Mike Chong, White Plains Public Safety Commission, told the outlet that fires from electrical vehicles were “very, very difficult to put out”.
“It exploded like a bomb,” he said.
Following the explosion, it is reported that a bystander was injured after being hit with a piece of shrapnel and needed medical attention.
A police investigation is ongoing to understand the cause of the crash.
