Ukrainian special forces strike Russian base in Syria

On the morning of Sunday, September 15, Ukrainian special forces from the Khimik group of the Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) launched a surprise attack on a Russian military base in Syria, according to a source within Ukraine’s military intelligence.

The Kyiv Post has reported that the operation, conducted on the southeastern outskirts of Aleppo, targeted a facility used by Russian forces for the production and testing of strike UAVs, as well as the assembly of camouflaged improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

Kyiv Post obtained exclusive footage of the attack, showing a GUR flag behind a berm near a garage repurposed as a Russian base. Shortly after, a powerful explosion rocked the site, followed by secondary detonations, likely from ammunition stored at the facility. Military and explosive experts consulted by Kyiv Post suggested the explosion may have been triggered by a rifle shot striking pre-planted explosives, rather than an RPG.

While the exact location and timing of the strike could not be independently verified, the operation appears to have occurred in broad daylight, in a desert-like environment. The footage is the latest in a series of covert operations by Ukrainian special forces against Russian interests in Syria.

The targeted base in Aleppo was reportedly a hub for Russia’s drone warfare efforts and the assembly of makeshift IEDs. Ukrainian intelligence believes that these facilities were directly linked to Russian operations in the region, providing critical support to Russian military activities both in Syria and beyond.
