Germany orders 17 more IRIS-T air defense systems for Ukraine

Germany has placed an order for 17 additional IRIS-T air defense systems for Ukraine, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2024, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced during a visit to an Air Force base near Kiel on September 4.

The new systems, aimed at bolstering Ukraine’s air defense capabilities, include eight medium-range IRIS-T SLM systems and nine short-range IRIS-T SLS systems.

According to Scholz, “Two systems of each type will be delivered this year, with the rest arriving by 2025,” as reported by German broadcaster N-TV.

Bloomberg, citing an unnamed German government official, added that all 17 systems will be fully delivered to Kyiv by 2026. Germany has already supplied Ukraine with seven IRIS-T systems—both SLS and SLM variants—since the start of the war.

Germany’s decision to increase its military aid to Ukraine underscores its commitment as one of the leading arms suppliers to the country, second only to the United States. To date, Berlin has allocated approximately €28 billion in military support, including both delivered equipment and future commitments.

The IRIS-T systems, produced by Diehl Defence, have proven vital for Ukraine in defending critical infrastructure against aerial threats. As Ukraine continues to face missile and drone strikes, the additional air defense capabilities are expected to play a crucial role in protecting key areas.
