McDonald’s India, in collaboration with the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), is set to introduce burgers featuring a unique multi-millet bun.The fast-food giant will source the millets directly from farmers for this initiative.This partnership marks a first in the quick service restaurant (QSR) sector, merging CSIR-CFTRI’s expertise with McDonald’s commitment toward creating nutritious food options.
Aiming to improve nutritional quality of food
Akshay Jatia, Executive Director of McDonald’s India, stated that the goal of this collaboration is to enhance the nutritional value of their food for long-term customer benefits.He emphasized that this initiative positions them at the forefront in the QSR sector.The multi-millet bun will incorporate five types of millets: Bajra, Ragi, Jowar, Proso, and Kodo.
Multi-millet bun burgers to cost ₹10 more
Jatia revealed that burgers with the multi-millet bun will cost an additional ₹10.This new product will be available across all 400 McDonald’s outlets operated by Westlife Foodworld in the western and southern regions of India.The company plans to source millets directly from over 5,000 farmers across seven states: Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh.

CSIR-CFTRI Director Sridevi Annapurna Singh expressed that this collaboration is a crucial step toward developing menu items with added nutritional value. She believes that combining CSIR-CFTRI’s research with McDonald’s India’s operational expertise and quality commitment, they are bringing in a new era of food innovation.
