MTN Group has announced the passing of Sifiso Dabengwa, who served as the group’s president and CEO from 2011 to 2015.
According to his spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, Dabengwa died at his Johannesburg home on Sunday morning, 1 September 2024, after a battle with cancer.
Dabengwa was also the former chair of Eskom.
MTN acknowledged him as a pivotal figure in MTN’s three-decade history and said his contributions to the company and the broader telecommunications industry are highly esteemed.
During his tenure, Dabengwa played a crucial role in steering MTN through notable periods of expansion and transformation. His strategic foresight and knowledge of the telecommunications landscape were instrumental in the company’s success during this era, the statement added.
The group emphasised that beyond his professional accomplishments, Dabengwa was admired for his integrity, humility, and the respect he extended to colleagues
Ralph Mupita, the current president and CEO of MTN Group, remarked: “Sifiso’s impact on MTN and the broader industry was significant. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward.”
