The Gray Wolf will now be responsible for patrolling the intercontinental ballistic missile fields at Malmstrom, as well as F.E. Warren AFB in Wyoming and Minot AFB in North Dakota. It is set to replace the aging UH-1N Hueys, which have been in service since the 1970s.

In terms of technical characteristics, the MH-139 Gray Wolf features a maximum takeoff weight of around 15,432 pounds [7,000 kilograms] and a useful load capacity of approximately 5,000 pounds [2,268 kilograms]. It can accommodate up to 15 passengers or a combination of passengers and cargo, depending on the mission requirements.
The control systems of the MH-139 Gray Wolf include advanced fly-by-wire technology, which enhances the helicopter’s handling and stability. This system allows for more precise control inputs and reduces pilot workload, contributing to safer and more efficient operations.
The MH-139 Gray Wolf is equipped with various types of weapons and defensive systems, depending on the mission. These can include machine guns, rocket pods, and missile systems for offensive capabilities, as well as countermeasure systems like chaff and flare dispensers for defense against incoming threats.
The operational range of the MH-139 Gray Wolf is approximately 690 nautical miles [1,278 kilometers] with standard fuel tanks. This range can be extended with the use of auxiliary fuel tanks, allowing the helicopter to perform long-duration missions without the need for frequent refueling.
