Kampala,Uganda:The Shadow Minister for Internal Affairs Betty Namboze Bakireke has called on the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs Balaam Barugahare Atenyi to apologize or resign for allegedly misleading Ugandans and Members of Parliament regarding the release of detained National Unity Party (NUP) supporters.
Earlier this month, Nambooze who is also Mukono Municipality MP said, plenary session chaired by the deputy speaker of parliament Thomas Tayebwa, pressed Minister Barugahara for an update on the detained youths, who have been on remand since 2021.
In his response, Minister Barugahara assured Parliament that efforts were underway to secure their release and that President Museveni would address the nation on the matter during the concluded International Youth Day.
However, President Museveni is yet to address the issue, leading Nambooze to accuse Minister Barugahara of hoodwinking MPs.
Similarly, Nambooze revealed to have written to Minister of Internal Affairs Major Gen Kahinda Otafiire, requesting that he investigates the alleged torture of Ugandans in prisons.
Nambooze alleges that police is working with criminals to torture Ugandans to the extent that even when victims report to police, the culprits are not arrested.
