Ukrainian expert warns of Russia’s fiber-optic drone advancements

Serhiy Beskrestnov, known by his callsign “Serhiy Flash,” a Ukrainian expert in military radiotechnology, has reported the use of FPV drones with digital video transmission channels by Russian forces in the Kursk region.

Beskrestnov, a technical consultant and blogger specializing in military radio technologies, highlighted the possible deployment of drones that operate via fiber-optic control and video transmission.

FPV drones using fiber optics instead of radio channels for control and video transmission represent a potentially promising development in this type of weaponry.

The implementation of fiber optics enables complete immunity to electronic warfare, as all control is conducted through a wire, significantly improving the quality of the image viewed by the operator. This enhancement in image quality directly translates to increased drone effectiveness and a higher probability of striking targets.

Among the additional advantages, fiber-optic control prevents the drone’s operation from being detected and the operator from being located by radio-electronic reconnaissance systems. Furthermore, this technology allows a significantly larger number of drones to operate simultaneously without the challenges of crowding within a single radio wave range, which complicates control.
