President William Ruto has announced a significant change in the leadership of Kenya’s prison system, appointing Patrick Mwiti as the new Commissioner General of Prisons.

This appointment, made public on Friday, July 12, marks a notable shift in the administration of the country’s correctional facilities.

Mwiti succeeds Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba, who is set to proceed on terminal leave as he nears the end of his tenure.

This change comes as part of President Ruto’s ongoing efforts to revitalise and improve the effectiveness of police services.

In an official statement, President Ruto remarked, “Mr. Patrick Mwiti Arandu has been appointed as the Commissioner General of Prisons. He will take over from Brigadier (Rtd) John Warioba, CBS, who is proceeding on terminal leave pending the end of his tenure of office.”

John Warioba was appointed by retired President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2021, following a high-profile jailbreak at Kamiti Maximum Security Prisons.
