The battleground states shifted toward former President Donald Trump in a new polling analysis of the presidential race.
The Cook Political Report, a non-partisan political handicapper, moved Arizona, Georgia, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Hampshire and Nevada in favor of Republicans.
Arizona, Georgia and Nevada shifted from a “toss-up” to a “lean Republican,” while Minnesota, New Hampshire, and a key district in Nebraska shifted from “likely Democrat” to “lean Democrat.”
A week before President Biden’s confused and bumbling performance in a June 27 debate with Mr. Trump, the two men were in a veritable dead heat in national polls. Mr. Trump now leads the national vote by 3 points, according to the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls.
Mr. Biden, 81, is now fighting to prove is not too old and frail to beat Mr. Trump and serve four more years. Seven House lawmakers have called on him to quit the presidential race.
Since the debate, polls show more voters — including many Democrats — worry about his cognitive abilities.
A CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday found that 72% of registered voters do not believe Mr. Biden has the cognitive health to serve as president.
That’s up from 65% from a CBS News/YouGov Poll taken two weeks before the debate.
Among Democrats, 41% said Mr. Biden does not have the mental and cognitive health to serve as president, versus 59% who said he did. By contrast, just 29% of Democrats said he wasn’t mentally up for the job in the pre-debate poll, while 71% said he was.
