Uganda celebrates after beating Madagascar to top Africa 7s in Mauritius

Uganda  was on sunday crowned champions of round one of Africa Men’s Sevens after thumping Madagascar 31-12 at Labourdonnais Sports Club in Mauritius on Sunday.

 

Aaron Ofoywroth landed the opener at the right corner after beating his markers on the wing.

In the second half, Madagascar kicked quickly for a try that reduced the deficit to 17-12.

Uganda then engineered two tries from Norbert Okenyi and Timothy Kisiga. Philip Wokorach was on hand to convert both to give Uganda a 31-12 win.

Uganda finished undefeated in the tournament after six matches.

The Rugby Cranes’ success sets the stage for the second round next weekend at the same venue.

The top teams from both rounds qualify for the 2025 World Rugby HSBC Sevens Challengers Series, excluding Kenya and South Africa.

UGANDA 7S DOUBLE LED

Madagascar could have pulled back after earning possession, but they lost the ball, and Uganda quickly launched an attack.

Timothy Kisiga sidestepped his marker before passing to Adrian Kasito for a try, which Philip Wokorach converted, giving Uganda a 12-0 lead.

The Makis responded with a kick and chase, cutting the gap to 12-5. A switch in play saw Philip Wokorach put Ofoywroth through for Uganda’s third try.

After the break, Madagascar hit back with a converted try, bringing their total to 12 points. However, Okeny managed to beat the defense and score a try, pushing Uganda’s lead to 24-12.

Kisiga then dived over for a try that put the game beyond the Makis, who had enjoyed massive comebacks throughout the competition. Wokorach converted for a final score of 31-12.

Uganda, seeking to qualify for the 2025 World Challenger Series, will be keen to carry this form into next weekend’s tournament to secure overall victory.

South Africa settled for third place after a massive 35-7 win. After a cagey first half, SA scored 22 points in the second half to secure the win.

The teams now shift focus to next weekend, where they will battle for the second leg and the decider.
