Government Chief Whip in the Parliament drags censure movers to a meeting

The Leader of government business in Parliament, Denis Hamson Obua, is meeting the movers of censure motion led by Lwemiyaga County MP Theodore Ssekikubo.

The motion seems the censure of four backbench commissioners over a controversial Shs1.7bn service award.

Ssekikubo, backed by Sarah Opendi, Bashir Sempa and Alion Odria – all of the ruling National Resistance Movement party – are seeking to have Mathias Mpuuga of Opposition National Unity Platform, and NRM members Solomon Silwany, Esther Afoyochan and Prossy Mbabazi thrown out of office.

According to sources, Obua summoned  Ssekikubo to his office yesterday. Summoned along with the outspoken legislator are Odria, Opendi and Sempa.

The agenda of the meeting remains unclear but at 11am, Sempa was the first to leave the censure motion desk followed by Odria and Ssekikubo.

Whip Obua had previously spoken out against the motion, saying it had not received the backing of the party and the NRM national chairman, President Museveni.

It remains unclear if the meeting is to bring an end to the censure motion that has exposed legislators and their cries to fight corruption.

Nearly a month since opening the censure motion, Ssekikubo has yet to gain the minimum 177 signatures needed to take the motion to the floor of parliament as several MPs continue to keep away citing various excuses.
