Aston Villa are close to completing a deal to sign Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen, according to various reports.
An agreement has been reached between the two clubs according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein. The fee is ‘just north’ of the £35m release clause that Borussia Dortmund had on Maatsen. Personal terms are in place for what will be a six-year deal.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano says that Villa are ‘confident’ to get it done by the end of the week. Chelsea have already given the green light for the transfer. The two teams are also in discussion about including a player in the deal, which is not guaranteed to be Jhon Duran, despite their interest.
Maatsen is currently away on international duty after being drafted in to the Netherlands’ EURO 2024 squad. Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners both had to withdraw and so the left-back is away until at least the end of June.
He is yet to be capped by the senior team and was an unused substitute in the 2-1 win over Poland on Sunday (June 19). Maatsen has just come off a season which saw him reach the final of the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea played him in 15 of their matches before loaning him out to Dortmund for the second half of the season. He appeared 23 times for the Bundesliga outfit, scoring three times whilst also supplying two assists.
