Kampala, (UG):- The Police in Kampala Metropolitan are investigating a heinous crime involving rape, aggravated robbery, and murder of a 28-year-old sex worker at Vintage Bar and Lodge in Kireka-Kamuli, a Kampala city suburb.
The incident according to KMP Deputy Spokesperson Mr Luke Owoyesigyire happened on the night of June 14, 2024, at Vintange Bar and Lodge where Faridah Arao, 28, a resident of Kireka Central Zone, Namugongo Division, Kira Municipality, was found dead.
“The crime was reported on the morning of June 15, 2024, at 11:23 am by Hilder Nandutu, a 52-year-old businesswoman and resident of Ntebetebe Zone, Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality,” Mr Owoyesigyire said in a Monday police statement, adding that when Nandutu noticed blood flowing from Arao’s locked room, suspicions of her death were realized.
“Upon receiving the report, the police registered the case. A team of homicide detectives and scene of crime officers visited the scene to document evidence,” he said.
Mr Owoyesigyire further noted that police recovered items from the room including used condoms, a blood-stained knife blade, a knife handle, and blood-stained clothes, all of which were sent for DNA analysis.
Owoyesigyire explained that preliminary investigation suggests she was murdered by someone she had taken to her room for sex. This individual then turned against her, using the knife to stab her and stealing her smartphone.
“Arao was discovered in a pool of blood, with her knees on the floor and a stab wound on her neck. Blood was splattered throughout, staining clothes, and a bloody knife blade lay beside her,” he said, adding that police also interviewed other sex workers in neighbouring rooms, and statements were obtained from Nandutu and other occupants.
The investigation noted that the room’s door could be locked from the inside because it had a gap allowing a hand to lock the inner bolts from the outside.
Although there was no CCTV camera facing Arao’s room, Owoyesigyire said a police camera at Junction Mall could provide helpful footage, and emphasised that inquiries are ongoing, with a view to arresting the suspect and bringing justice to the victim.
