Iganga, (UG):- Grief and fear engulfed residents of Igulusa village, Bukaye parish, Nakalama sub-county in Iganga district on Thursday after their fellow resident was buried dead in a stone quarry on the afternoon.
The deceased who was identified as Waiswa Asuman Kapaata, 30, had reportedly gone for business as usual in the quarry and reports suggest that he succumbed to suffocation when soil and stones collapsed on him.
Mr. Muwumba Mubaraka, a leader in the area told this publication that on the fateful day, the deceased had woken up early morning for stone quarrying before meeting his death. He was a son of Isabirye Habibu from the same residence.
“He was in the quarry and the soil covered him and he died on the spot. We have retrieved the body as a community and we’re waiting for police to give guidance on the burial arrangements,” Mr. Muwumba said, adding that the deceased has been relying on quarrying as his primary economic activity.
Most of the residents in Igulusa village and the neighbouring villages rely on stone quarrying as their primary economic activity given the Kigulu hill and many construction projects in Iganga and beyond ferry aggregate stones from the area.
We have also learnt that the scene was a deadly spot to carry out the activity and a number of people have been warning the quarry members against risks that would result.
understands that police visited and documented the scene and later permitted the relatives of the deceased to proceed with burial arrangements.
Muwumba urged the public to always be vigilant while carrying out stone quarrying and avoid risking their lives.
