Today, on May 23, 2024, the parliamentary appointments committee is set to review the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Abas Byakagaba, and his deputy, James Ocaya. This committee, chaired by Speaker Anita Among, is tasked with evaluating and confirming key government appointments.

The appointment of Byakagaba as the Police chief came from President Yoweri Museveni on Friday, May 17, 2024. Byakagaba takes over from Martins Okoth Ochola, who retired from the position earlier this year. Additionally, James Ocaya steps into the role of deputy, succeeding Maj. Gen. Tumusiime Katsigazi, who is slated for redeployment within the army.

Pending the outcome of the vetting process, Byakagaba and Ocaya are anticipated to oversee ceremonies marking the transition of other officers assuming roles within the police leadership structure. Among these appointments are Frank Mwesigwa, who will assume leadership of the Police Directorate of Operations, Charles Kataratambi, tasked with heading the Legal Directorate, Fadhil Kaali, responsible for fire and rescue operations, and Hadija Namutebi, who will oversee research and planning initiatives within the police force.

These appointments signal a reconfiguration of leadership within the Uganda Police Force, with new faces poised to take on crucial roles in shaping the direction and operations of the institution.
